Shanghai International Shipping Institute was officially established on July 14, 2008. Han Zheng, Deputy Secretary and Mayor of Shanghai Municipal Committee, sent a congratulatory letter. Xu Zuyuan, Vice Minister of Transport, and Shen Jun, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, jointly unveiled the brand. The Institute is co-sponsored by Shanghai Maritime University, Hongkou District People's Government and other 10 units, approved by the Shanghai Education Commission, and supported by the Shanghai Construction and Transportation Commission. In 2014, it was listed in the construction plan of key research bases of Humanities and Social Sciences in Shanghai universities.
