Tide: Reciprocating along the river. The tidal current velocity is 0.77-1.03 m/s and the ebb current velocity is 1.29 m/s. Waves: Guangzhou Port is nearly 100 km away from the Pearl River Estuary. Waves are gradually dissipated by the influence of riverbed, topography and water depth. The port area basically belongs to an inland river port. The waters in other areas are generally 1-2 km wide, the widest is 3 km, and the wind waves are not very large. Generally, no protective structures are considered, only the influence of waves should be considered in the design of hydraulic structures. Guangzhou Port is located at the northern end of the Pearl River Delta, at the confluence of the east, West and North rivers of the Pearl River Basin, 145 kilometers from the sea. From the Pearl River Estuary to the port, the order is Humen Outer Port Area, Xinsha Port Area, Huangpu Port Area and Inner Port Area. There are 643 berths for large and small wharfs, including 460,000-ton berths. Guangzhou Port is easy to sail, 35,000 tons of ships can go directly to Huangpu Port Area. Huangpu Port is 17 kilometers away from Guangzhou and has a wide water area. Its harbour conditions are superior and it has direct river-sea access. Maritime transportation is connected with inland river transportation, railway transportation and highway transportation, and it has good natural harbour conditions in all directions. Huangpu Port now has 123 berths, including 5 container berths of 35,000 tons and 22 berths below 10,000 tons. It ranks ninth in the world. In 2003, port throughput reached 191 million tons, ranking among the top ten ports in the world. Container throughput is 2.54 million. From January to October 2004, the throughput of foreign trade goods was 173.32 million tons, an increase of 24.1% over the same period last year.
